Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2003 - 1:28 p.m. Greetings, Apparently it’s official. Autumn has begun. At least that’s what my calendar says. So now when I blather on about it, it won’t be wishful thinking, it will actually be here. Now that it’s here, I wish it were more like autumn in New England. The turning leaves, the crisp temperatures (sweater weather we call it), the cold bright blue of the daytime sky, geese flying overhead in a V formation, the smell of wood smoke on the air. It gets crisp here and I think October is the prettiest month in New Orleans, but it’s not New England. I miss fall foliage tours and the hikes through the woods I used to take with friends. Eh. I will get to take hikes through the woods at my parents’ house in November so I do have that to look forward to. And October is chock full of caftan nights to celebrate the fall. In fact there’s a “Triple Header” coming up next week – Thursday through Saturday. Non-stop caftans! And I have a full month to think up a suitable caftan to wear on Halloween night. Unfortunately I lost my black caftan in the fire at Sinwood, so that one is out, which is a shame because it’s black and all. But I have others that have black in them. And fall colors. For instance: My Brother & Sister Animal Print. It’s black and brown and has animal prints all over it – giraffe, leopard, cheetah. That would be appropriate. Or, there’s my New York caftan. It’s got dark greens and purples and black in it. It’s VV Halloween. And then there’s my New Animal Print, which is all over cheetah patterned, and brown and cream. Also, there’s my Moroccan caftan to consider. It has a variety of browns and black in it and is very autumnal. Last but not least there’s my Jewel Tone which, while not very Halloweenish or autumnal, was the caftan I wore the first ever Halloween Costume Caftan Night. I’m a sucker for nostalgia as anyone who reads my journal even more than two times can probably (wearily) attest. What choices I have! This is the 4th Annual Halloween Costume Caftan Night. I already related I wore my Jewel Tone for the first and my midnight black for the third. For the second one I wore the New York caftan. So I probably should choose a caftan I haven’t worn yet. Hmmm. I can’t relate which one I choose until Halloween night itself since Tommy reads this journal and I want to surprise him. He’s also choosing a mystery caftan for that night. He wore his jewel tone for the first and his Brother & Sister Animal Print for the third, but I cannot remember, alas, what he wore for the second. Shockingly bad of me. I’m betting it was his New York because there was one year we both wore the same one even though we didn’t plan to. So that sounds right. See, I can remember if given a chance! I may be old, but I’m not senile yet I guess. It was quiet around here for a while. All the other secretaries went to lunch leaving me to guard the fort and I very much enjoyed it – especially since there wasn’t much fort to guard. I, myself, will be journeying to lunch in 15 minutes or so. Boring day here at work so far. But then that’s nothing new. A goddamn huge roach ran at my foot this morning in Tommy’s chamber, but Tommy was on top of it and (don’t read this, Kat) “got rid” of him for me. The cats wanted the job too, but they aren’t allowed in Tommy’s chamber usually. My aunt sent me a whole bunch of cut glass bowls, candy dishes, etc. yesterday. Well, yesterday is when I actually received them. I now have a nut bowl and a pickle and olive dish and some cut glass serving bowls. Lovely stuff – holidays here I come! Thanks, Donna! And thanks Mom and Dad for packing it up and sending it to me. Good gods, I’m bored. Guess I’ll stagger off to lunch now. Blah. Until next time, Olrun
